Counter Top with Butterfly Joints (2 images)
This counter top was inspired by the renowned Japanese American wood
worker/furniture designer/architect George Nakashima who was trained as a
Japanese craftsman and spent the latter half of his life working out of
a wood shop in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Nakashima routinely built large
tables using thick slabs of wood with rough unfinished sides to
represent the natural, wild origin of the wood. Nakashima used the
buttefly joints, a signature characteristic of his, to join two large
slabs and to fix natural occuring cracks in the slabs. The wood for the
counter top came from a black walnut tree that grew in Pearl River, NY.
The butterfly joints are made of white maple.

Burial Box (2 images)
This box was used to hold the ashes of our deceased father. It is buried
at the Brookside Cemetery in Englewood, New Jersey. The box is made of a
Brazilian hard wood called Ipe which was selected for its durability.
The cuts for the joinery used to connect the sides were cut by hand with
a Japanese handsaw called a Douzuki Dovetail saw. The finish is three
coats of tung oil.

Carriage House Doors (2 images)
Four 19th-century carriage house doors, each measuring seven and one
half feet wide by ten feet tall, were carefully restored for a private

High Chest of Drawers (2 images)
These high chest of drawers were built with an aim to provide an
abundance
of storage space. They were made using hand-cut joinery. The two types
of joinery used are dovetail and mortise and tenon. There
were no nails and no glue used and the only screws in the piece were
used to attach the top surface and install the drawer pulls.
The piece is 59" high, 36" wide and 19" deep and it is
made of white maple with clear cedar used in the inner drawers.

Gusset
A client asked for decorative brackets for the ceiling of an exterior
porch. Four were made of clear cedar.
End Table
A client who needed end tables as well as storage to accommodate
oversized books commissioned this piece, made as a pair. Maple finished
with a clear stain complements a modern, uncluttered environment while
lending a natural touch.
Side Table (2 images)
Inspired by the work of Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto,
this compact side table was made of salvaged California redwood. The
clients, who have an interest in both design and conservation, asked
that such imperfections as nail marks and uneven coloring be
incorporated to lend the pieces a more organic feeling. The tables are
finished with a clear varnish. The detail shows their trapezoidal
dovetailing.

Outdoor Chair
The design of this outdoor chair is based on those used on the grounds
at Wave Hill, a public garden and cultural center overlooking the
Hudson River in the Bronx. Originally designed by Dutch architect and
furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld, this updated version is made of
clear cedar coated with an oil-based finish.
Cedar Outdoor Chest
This outdoor chest was designed to hold a sandbox in it's interior and
other outdoor toys (chalk etc.). The design is simple utilizing no
hardware. It is made of knotty cedar coated with a 100% pure tung oil
finish.
Cedar Fence
A client wanted a private fence at their property boundary with lattice
on the top sixteen inches for limited visibility. The posts are 4x4
pressure treated southern yellow pine. The structure is built with
western red cedar 2x4's and the large panels below are knotty grade
western red cedar tongue and groove. The lattice is made of #1 western
red cedar. The post caps are 4x4 flat
top cedar with cedar ball tops. No finish was used.
Latticework
Eight substantial lattice structures were created for a landscape
architect in Upper Grandview, New York. Used in the design of a private
residential garden, the latticework was constructed of clear Western
Red Cedar with a clear oil-based finish.
Spice Rack
This spice rack was commissioned for a
client s urban kitchen, which boasted large wall spaces but few
cabinets. Measurements were made to accommodate their variously sized
containers. Having all of the spices hanging on the wall out in the open
prevents the common mistake of purchasing more than one bottle of a
particular spice. This mistake happens to people who keep their spices
inside a cabinet; when they realize they need a spice for a recipe, they
open their spice cabinet to see if they already own it, but they miss
seeing it because it is buried at the back of the cabinet so they
inadvertently go out and buy a second or third bottle of the same spice.

stain.

Room Divider
A client sought an elegant, yet simple solution for the creation of a
foyer in order to make a more discreet transition from her house s main
entry to living area. Her love for painting led to the commission of a
room divider, which she could then personalize with her own artwork.
The natural color and grain of the resultant paneled screen were so
pleasing, however, that she decided to let the wood speak for itself.
